 Virtual dedicated server hosting
Between shared or colocated and dedicated server hosting is virtual dedicated server
hosting. Multibase provides and manages the hardware, operating system, security, monitoring, networking and backup. Multiple clients are hosted on one physical server,
however the server is configured so that each user has a dedicated root password, processor power, and server space. The environment can be customised extensively for the site owner.
This is suitable for significant business applications with specialist privacy, security and performance requirements.
What is a Virtual Dedicated Server?
Multibase’s VDS uses Xen on a Linux system to provide virtualisation. The VDS administrator is
effectively the root of his/her unix system, able to perform the whole range of system configuration and administration tasks, save the hardware management. A virtual dedicated
server gives many of the advantages of a dedicated server, at a much lower price.
You may compile and install on your VDS your own software, using standard unix-system
techniques. It is your VDS disk space that is used to host the software you have installed.
If required, you may host multiple web sites and domains in your VDS server space. Each VDS can have one or more IP addresses.
Certain restrictions exist as to the degree of utilization of system resources, namely of the
memory and of the processor time. The allocation of system resources between the VDS hosted on a single physical server is done in a dynamic way, its unique algorithm ensuring an
uninterrupted operation of all the VDS, regardless of the operation and demand for system resources of each individual VDS.
With VDS hosting, Multibase provides and manages the hardware and basic server setup. Linux
RPM packages can be installed. Operating system, software and virus protection must be managed, which can be done by Multibase or the site owner.
 Reliable hardware
Multibase maintains a business relationship with Dell Computer as its principal supplier of server hardware. Dell machines provide a favourable price-performance ratio, as well as flexible
configuration, reliability and the ability to upgrade. Equipment is protected by same day service agreements, and specialist consultants are readily available. Customers select the amount of
server space and dedicated processor power required.
Software environment
The initial Multibase setup includes a Debian Linux base, SSHD, secure FTP (Proftpd) and the web server (Apache). Customers have access to Multibase’s server for mail. Alternatively, we
can install a Mail server (Postfix). Other RPM packages can be installed e.g. MySQL/PHP, PostresSQL. We also typically install a GUI (Webmin) for server management. Alternatively, the
customer can undertake these installations.
Security
The hosting environment is protected in a fully integrated building management system. Strict access protocols, 24 hour security guards, CCTV and biometric hand readers protect the data
centre from unauthorised access. The Multibase environment is located in a locked cage within the data centre and is only accessible to a limited number of authorised Multibase personnel.
Internet bandwidth
The hosting environment provides a high-speed, guaranteed bandwidth, local area network connection to the Internet. Broadband Internet access is provided by a fully redundant meshed
carrier class network and four telecommunications providers. Multibase’s current dedicated upstream Internet connection is 10 megabits, which is underloaded for existing requirements.
This can burst to 150 megabits. Customers select the amount of data traffic they require.
Power
The facility provides Multibase with redundant power to its network, with generators, UPS and other power management tools to filter power irregularities. Multibase staff have remote access
to remote power monitoring and management, including restarts, for after hours and remote management.
Operating system management
The operating system in your VDS must be for security to protect your web server against malicious attack. The server operating systems are either managed by the site owner, or by our
external specialist consultants on a daily basis. Our consultants monitor both our servers and the available information about the status and security of the operating system software, and
apply appropriate patches and upgrades as recommended by vendors. For security reasons Multibase only supports FTP over SSL, SSH, Secure FTP, or WebDAV. We do not allow FTP or
telnet access to our servers.
Monitoring
Servers are monitored using the industry-standard What’s Up? Gold, which is accessible both during business hours and remotely by Multibase staff. Specific customer services can also be
added to the monitoring system if required, as can remote notifications by SMS or other means in the case of failure reports. Multibase’s office is only a few blocks from the data centre, so
personal attendance at the data centre by our staff can be organised readily during business hours. The centre is also accessible to Multibase staff around the clock.
Border security
Multibase manages its own firewall systems, with a redundant warm-swappable replacement available. Network access rules are very tight, for example telnet is not allowed to any server
and FTP is only allowed with SSL to minimise security risks. Multibase’s network is protected with industry-standard software. We implement specific rules for the server in the firewall e.g. if
SMTP is not required, we can institute a rule to drop all attempts to use for mail, or we can log specific events as required.
Backup
Dedicated servers are added to the backup schedule by default unless they have individual tape drives. Backups are compressed and written to tape. At any time, we have the previous day’s
backups ready to be restored from tape if required. Tapes are cycled daily, and an offsite backup is undertaken on Friday and stored in a fireproof safe.

Application management
Although Virtual Dedicated Server hosting prices do not cover support of the web site owner’s individual applications or web site, Multibase can manage these under separate service
agreements. This is typically the case when we are also the developers for the project. This has speed, reliability and cost advantages, because our technical staff are familiar with all aspects of
a complex project and the environment that it requires for smooth operation.
