Bathurst New South Wales Toastmasters. tony lynch. icebreaker speech. July 4.2005
Interpretation of what he was trying to say:- (by lynchy)
Mr. Toastmaster, Ladies & Gentlemen:-
Attention Seeking.
Well i guess everyone might agree, Life on earth is a wondrous string
of events, but it's PARTICularly our attention seeking abilities that bring about
the most changes that effect our Lives. In the beginning we
instinctively learn to cry out for; Love, food and attention. We manage to
manipulate our attention seeking beheavoir for generally
appropriate responses, changing or stopping others in their tracks to
do something because of it or at least bring about some alteration to thinking
patterns.
Back in 1984 I moved onto a bit of dirt out in the hills at Palmer's
Oaky. This was a Lifelong dream for subsistence living and Survival. I
spent the first ten years at least alone, with lots of Time to ponder
and plan. Riding on horseback around the mountains, I always wondered
what on earth you could say that would blow people away, make them sit
up and take notice, and change their Lives forever. What was it that
would rock them off their feet for a change that would see EVERYONE
begin a new way of Life?
I listen to abc radio a lot and one day i heard an address from the
press club in Canberra. A-bloke was talking about the Internet. For me
at least it was before computers, infact I don't think I really
knew what a computer could do at the Time or even was:- but the concept
that you could put up a web page anyone on around the globe with a
connection could see, hear and react on was mind boggling. It gave me
the hunch to how I might bring about some changes. Of course, once that
seed had sprouted, lynchy's was away.
In 1993 wool prices collapsed, and luck for me but not my boss who was
forced to put me off. After a year or so with no paid work I moved to
the Blue Mountains and soon after started a job with a funeral
directors. I bought a computer and between the odd jobs, it was funeral
attendant on call, I would muck away on the pooter and eventually had
my first, very simple page up. I was blown away with excitement, to
think I was out there in cyberspace and anyone could see. I registered
my url with as many search engines as I could find and think I might
have invented spamming and did a bit of that. After a lot of mucking
about I managed to organise a hit counter and was totally thrilled once
I could see a few hits taking place.
Over the next few years the website soon became a promotional advocacy for Golden Boomerang Landcare and a tool of debate for
democracy. My dream is now to come up with the words that will blow the
globe away into an overnight conscience shift that on the next morning
finds everyone hugging one another on the streets and saying, ' what
was all that about', stopping fighting altogether and beginning new
Lives.
Thank you.
